Standalone Engine Management System (ECU) Emissions Disclaimer

Standalone Engine Management System (ECU) Disclaimer

Effective Date: 01/12/2024 | Last Updated: 31/01/2025

1. General Disclaimer

Motorsport Calibrations supplies standalone engine management systems (ECUs) for motorsport, off-road, and specialist applications. By purchasing or installing an aftermarket ECU, the customer assumes full responsibility for ensuring compliance with UK road laws, emissions regulations, MOT standards, and insurance requirements.

By purchasing from Motorsport Calibrations, you acknowledge and agree to these terms.

2. Road-Legal vs. Motorsport-Only Standalone ECUs

Standalone ECUs can significantly alter engine performance, emissions control, and vehicle diagnostics. The legality of an aftermarket ECU depends on its configuration and compliance with UK regulations.

A) Road-Legal ECU Applications

  • Retains full functionality of emissions control devices, including:
    • Catalytic converters
    • Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF)
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems
    • Lambda (O2) sensors
  • Does not increase engine power beyond manufacturer limits in a way that affects emissions compliance.
  • Passes an MOT emissions test when correctly mapped.
  • Does not tamper with OBD-II diagnostic readiness.

⚠️ If you intend to use a standalone ECU for road use, it is your responsibility to ensure it is mapped and configured to comply with UK emissions laws.

B) Motorsport-Only / Off-Road Use ECUs

  • Allow removal or disabling of emissions control devices (EGR, DPF, catalytic converters, lambda sensors).
  • Support launch control, anti-lag, and "pops and bangs" tuning, which may exceed UK noise limits.
  • Enable power increases beyond manufacturer specifications, which may invalidate insurance.
  • Disable OBD-II emissions reporting, causing automatic MOT failure.

⚠️ These products will be clearly marked as "For Motorsport Use Only." By purchasing a non-road-legal ECU, you confirm that it will not be installed on a road-going vehicle.

3. Customer Responsibilities

By purchasing a standalone ECU from Motorsport Calibrations, you confirm that you:

  • Understand that an ECU may impact road legality, emissions compliance, insurance, and MOT results.
  • Will disclose ECU modifications to your insurance provider.
  • Will not use a non-road-legal ECU on a public road.
  • Accept full liability for ensuring your vehicle remains roadworthy and compliant with UK law.

4. No Liability for Misuse

Motorsport Calibrations:

  • Does not sell, install, or promote illegal ECU modifications for road use.
  • Is not responsible for fines, penalties, or prosecution if a customer installs an ECU in an illegal manner.
  • Will not provide refunds for ECUs that fail an MOT due to incorrect installation or mapping.

5. Returns & Refunds Policy

  • No returns for ECUs that have been installed, programmed, or used.
  • If an ECU is incorrectly labelled as road-legal, we will offer a full refund or replacement.
  • Customers must verify their ECU’s intended use and compliance before purchase.

6. DVSA Compliance & Investigations

  • Motorsport Calibrations operates within UK law and does not sell ECUs intended for emissions tampering.
  • If contacted by UK authorities (DVSA, VOSA, Trading Standards), we will fully cooperate in compliance investigations.
  • If an ECU is found to be non-compliant, we reserve the right to cease sales or update product descriptions accordingly.

7. Acknowledgement of Disclaimer

By purchasing a standalone ECU from Motorsport Calibrations, you confirm that you:

  • Understand the legal implications of ECU modifications.
  • Will ensure that your ECU setup is compliant with UK road laws.
  • Accept full responsibility for any MOT failures, insurance issues, or regulatory enforcement actions.
